Conservation Award Finalists

Preserving 2000 year old rock arts and wildlife at once in Zimbabwe, flora and fauna protection on a small Indian Ocean island in the Seychelles, as well as a large forest conservation project in Uganda are all efforts made by the 2011 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards finalists for the Conservation category.
Entrants have made a tangible contribution to the preservation of nature, including the protection of wildlife, expanding and restoring natural habitat, and supporting biodiversity conservation. Finalists are:

Frégate Private Island is a 3km² privately owned island in the Seychelles which is operated as a luxury eco-resort. In 1998, after 200 years of coconut and cinnamon monoculture which displaced endemic species and led to the devastation of essential habitat for native fauna, Frégate's ecological programme began with rehabilitation of surface terrain, soil and flora.

Situated in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, this lodge was established with the core purpose of making a meaningful contribution towards the cost of conserving this extraordinary 122,789 acre reserve in the south eastern corner of Zimbabwe. Alongside the Reserve, the Malilangwe Trust, a Zimbabwean non-profit-organisation, has been in existence for 15 years and, over that time, has rehabilitated the natural habitat to its original state; conserved the existing wildlife whilst carefully reintroducing 17 previously plentiful resident species. In total 3,112 animals, ranging from Black Rhino to Zebra, have been brought back home to breed and re-establish themselves in their natural environment.

The Jane Goodall Institute / Budongo Ecotourism Development Project

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is an international non-profit organisation that has been active in Uganda since 1996. The Budongo Ecotourism Development Project (BEDP) was established in partnership with JGI and the National Forestry Authority (NFA) in 2006. The Budongo Forest Reserve, which is under the jurisdiction of the NFA is situated in north western Uganda and home to a substantial chimpanzee population of significant biodiversity importance.

Nat Geo Host Dr Brady Barr To Moderate The Awards

Once again, winners and finalists will be recognised at WTTC’s annual Global Travel & Tourism Summit, held this year at the sustainably-designed and certified Aria Resort in Las Vegas from 17 – 19 May. This year, we are pleased to announced that Dr Brady Barr, National Geographic Channel host will moderate the Awards ceremony. Dr Barr has participated in plenty research of projects with leading scientists throughout the world including his ongoing research, supported by the National Geographic Society, into conservation of the American crocodile in Costa Rica, and his dietary study of alligators in the Florida Everglades. He is well known for his TV series "Reptile Wild", "Croc Chronicles" and "Snake Bite".
Delegates at the Summit will find out the winners in each category as part of the event’s official opening ceremony and welcome dinner. The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are organised in association with Travelport and the Travel Corporation's Conservation Foundation.
